Butcher, a junior, had a breakout performance to finish as Milligan’s fourth runner of the day. This performance helped carry the Buffs to a second place finish at the AAC Championships. Butcher jumped 18 spots from the 2008 AAC Championships to finish 13th overall and one spot out of a national qualifier. James is the son of Dale and Bonnie Butcher of Marietta, Ga. and is majoring in Communications at Milligan.

While newcomer Catie McMahon (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) rounded out the all-Lady Buffs top three in 19:27. Catie was the top finishing freshman of the day at the AAC Championships. She placed 3rd overall to claim her place on the All-AAC team, as well as, the top runner on the All Freshman team. Catie is the daughter of Melanie and Steve McCabe and Ed McMahon of Lanoka Harbor, NJ and is undecided in her major.







 

Lady Buffs 11th at nationals
Vancouver, Wash. (Nov. 21, 2009) --- The Milligan College women’s cross country team finished 11th at the 2009 NAIA Cross Country National Championships Saturday in Vancouver, Wash. Individually, sophomores Austin Ellis (Charlottesville, Va.) and Gillian Giffen (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned All-American honors with their performance.

Giffen, a two-time AAC runner of the year, added NAIA Cross Country All-American to her already impressive résumé Saturday in the 30th running of the women’s national championships. The highest AAC finisher on the women’s side, Giffen crossed the line in 18:43 to place 21st overall.

Three Milligan freshmen were next for the Lady Buffs in Catie McMahon (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.), Leah Nelson (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Lauren Hubbard (Kingsport, Tenn.). McMahon finished the 5K in 19:31, while Nelson and Hubbard were seconds apart at 20:03 and 20:05, respectively. Rounding out the Lady Buffs top five was junior Lili Zaldana (Bristol, Tenn.) in 20:12.

As in previous years, the Lady Buffs had a higher finish in the championships than they were voted in the final national rankings. The Milligan women were also the highest AAC finisher of any school men or women.

Milligan cross country set for nationals

Milligan College, Tenn. (Nov. 19, 2009) --- The Milligan College cross country women’s team and three Buffs will run in the NAIA Cross Country National Championships Saturday, Nov. 21, in Vancouver, Wash.   

The Lady Buffs qualified for the national meet by winning their seventh straight Appalachian Athletic Conference title on Nov. 7, in Black Mountain, N.C. Milligan had eight ladies finish in the top ten spots and decisively secured first place, scoring 17 points to second-place Bryan College’s 60 points.   

The Lady Buffs’ stampede towards the finish was led by sophomore Gillian Giffen (Knoxville, Tenn.) who won the 5,000-meter race in 19:01 and claimed her second AAC Runner of the Year award. Over the course of the season, Giffen broke her own personal best at the 2009 Charlotte Invite with a time of 17:54 which places her third on the Lady Buffs’ All-Time list.
