Buffs show up strong at ETSU tournament

Johnson City, Tenn. (September 23, 2007) --- The Milligan College men's and women's tennis teams had a successful weekend between the East Tennessee State University Fall Invitational and the International Tennis Association Southeast Regional. The ETSU tournament was played in perfect weather at ETSU campus, The Liberty Bell Complex, and the W.T. Mathes Tennis Courts at Milligan College.

Milligan sophomores Sara Hopson (Greeneville, Tenn.) and Janie Mullins (Greenville, Ala.) teamed up to win a doubles match against University of the Cumberlands' Donna Strong and Kelsey Bauer. Kenzie Pfeifer (Washington Court House, Ohio) and Jessie Rose Remegi (Hilton Head, S.C.) also won their doubles match against Shelby Stanley and Jessica Lowrie from the University of the Cumberlands.

Pfeifer defeated Paola Aybar from Mars Hill in singles action, as did her teammates Remegi and Hopson. Remegi played Strong of the Cumberlands and Hopson played Haley Farris of the Cumberlands. (new paragraph)

In men's action, first time player Jeremiah Key (Walkertown, N.C.) defeated Jacob Pace of the Cumberlands decisively 6-3, 6-4.

In Lebanon, Tenn., Milligan's top players competed at the ITA Southeast Region tournament. Freshman Caitlin Conley (Bristol, Tenn.) started strong with a win over King College's Marley Cutler 6-0, 6-2 but had a tough second round. Melissa Grgat (Melbourne, Australia) went into the tournament seeded third but lost after her first round bye to Ana Santos from Bethel College.

Brian Upshaw (Kingsport, Tenn.) won his first round over Matt Dyer of Martin Methodist College but was unable to pull it out against Edgar Galea from Cumberland University. Though losing his first round after a heart breaking tiebreaker, Johnathon Ryan (Wangaratta, Australia) went on to win two back draw matches against Adam Post and Gelso Ferreira of Martin Methodist.
