Lady Buffs beat Bluefield
Bluefield, Va. (September 29, 2007) -- The Milligan College women's soccer team conceded an early goal in the 17 th minute courtesy of Bluefield's Kyri Jacobs, then hammered 5 goals past the Lady Rams defense to finish the away conference encounter with a commanding 1-5 victory.
Samantha McClay (Elizabethton, Tenn.) opened the visitor's scoring account in the 26 th minute when Becca Mauldin (Clinton, Miss.) threaded a ball through to the local stand-out, which she converted. McClay's second goal of the match was once again created by Mauldin in the 34 th minute, which ultimately proved to be the game-winning strike.
The Lady Rams' defense went to the half-time early when Kristen Crute (Marietta, Ga.) took advantage of a momentary lapse of concentration, striking just before the break in the 43 rd minute.
Soon after the restart Crute assisted teammate McClay in the 65 th minute while claiming her third goal of the encounter, and her second hat-trick of the season. Jenna Zutt (Lexington, Ky.) contributed to the away conference victory when her corner-kick found a composed Mauldin in the box, who hammered the final goal home.
“During the first-half we displayed some nerves, but after the break we began passing the ball better and opening gaps,” commented Assistant Coach Lisa Buckley. “With some injury issues we are glad to come away with a convincing away conference win.”
The Buffs will take on conference foe Tennessee Wesleyan, Oct. 2. Kick-off is set for 5 p. m. at home in Milligan College.
