Lady Buffs claim conference opener
Dayton, TENN. (Sept. 5, 2007) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team claimed their first conference win of the season to the Lady Lions of Bryan College. The Lady Buffs had to fight for the win, but ultimately prevailed by a margin of 1-3.
The Lady Lions capitalized upon their early offensive pressure, when Bryan's Elizabeth Wimberly converted a corner kick, with a well placed header. The Lady Buffs responded to the temporary set-back, by out-shooting the opposition 12-9 during the encounter. The visitors ended the first half, and started the second half of regulation with a goal in the 41 and 46 minute by Becca Mauldin (Clinton, Miss.) and Charissa Thompson (Pensicola, Fla.) respectively.
Mauldin, a midfield freshmen sensation struck unassisted from distance, to even the match which initiated the comeback. Soon after the restart, Thompson capitalized upon an unorganized defense, to claim the game-winning goal for the Lady Buffs.
Feeding from their momentum the Lady Buffs' Samantha McClay (Elizabethton, Tenn.) drove into the box in the 53 minute, and took full advantage of a difficult angle, to put the tie beyond the reach of the Lady Lions. Locking up the Lady Buffs' defense was Kelley Foster (Johnson City, Tenn.), who stifled the Lady Lions offense during the second half.
“We are delighted to come away with the win from the conference opener. There are still some things we need to address, but overall this was a good performance and a good result.” said Assistant Coach Lisa Buckley.
Next up for the Lady Buffs will be another away game, this time against the University of the Cumberlands. Kick-off is set for 4:30 p.m. in Williamsburg, Ky. For more information please visit www.milliganbuffs.com
