'Black and Orange World Series' underway

Milligan College, Tenn. (Oct. 22, 2008) --- The 2008 Milligan College Baseball team began their annual Black and Orange World Series Tuesday, Oct. 21, under the lights at Anglin Field. The “Milligan Black” team won game one of the best of five series 7-6.

Senior captains Brian Busby (Lexington, S.C.), Mark Simo (Sheffield Lake, Ohio) and Michael Dillow (Gray, Tenn.) headed up the black squad against the opposing orange team who was led by senior captains Brandon Murphy (Johnson City, Tenn.), Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Justin Motte (Johnson City, Tenn.).

Milligan's Black team jumped out to an early lead as they scored two runs in the first inning. Milligan's Orange team rallied back and regained the lead at 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Milligan Black team drove in a run, and two more an inning later to stretch their lead to 7-5. Milligan's Orange team tried to muster a comeback as they drove in a run, but the tying run was left stranded on third base.

Sophomore Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) earned the win on the mound for Milligan's Black team in two and a third innings. Junior transfer Aaron Doriety (Pickens, S.C.) suffered the loss in just an inning of work.

At the plate, Busby and junior Eric Oxley (Ardmore, Tenn.) led Milligan's Black team with two hits apiece. On the Orange side, Street and sophomore Jimmy Mosier (Morristown, Tenn.) brought the offensive attack as they also added two hits apiece.

"Our world series always generates a lot of excitement within our club,” said Head Coach Nathan Meade. “The guys love coming out here and competing against each other. Not only does it allow our guys to perform in game situations but is also allows us to evaluate our club as a staff from a different viewpoint."

Game two is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, with the first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. Game three will be held Friday, Oct. 24, at 5:00 p.m., while games four and five will follow if necessary on Monday, Oct. 27, and Tuesday, Oct. 28. Admission is free and all fans are encouraged to attend.
