Buffs clinch AAC regular season title
Milligan College, Tenn. (Oct. 24, 2009) --- The Milligan College men’s soccer earned AAC bragging rights Saturday night in front of a home crowd as they knocked off Tennessee Wesleyan and secured the AAC regular season title. The Buffs fended off the Bulldogs by a final of 3-1.
Milligan seniors Phil Wilson (Middlesbrough, England) and Josh Scott (London, England) came ready to play on their final regular season game on Anglin Field. Wilson and Scott tacked on back-to-back goals as the Buffs went up a quick 2-0.
The Bulldog’s Billy Sparks headed in a ball from Richard Zuzart in the 54th minute to cut the Buffs lead to one goal. Wesleyan’s efforts would fall short, however, as sophomore Sandre Wilson (Mandeville, Jamaica) pinned on the insurance goal to give the Buffs a 3-1 victory.
Defensively, senior keeper Bryan Newbold (Sylva, N.C.) recorded five saves in the contest while he only allowed one goal.
“It’s a great feeling to have all the guys hard work pay off,” commented Head Coach Adam Laney. “We knew it would be a battle coming into the game, but the guys stayed focused and played hard and were able to get the win.”
With the win, the Buffs improve to a league best 10-4-1 overall and 6-1 in the AAC.
The Buffs are scheduled to take on NCAA Division II Carson-Newman on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m.
