Milligan takes two at Appalachian State

Boone, N.C. (Oct. 3, 2009) --- The Milligan College softball team posted quality wins Saturday at Appalachian State University. The Lady Buffs defeated NCAA Division I Appalachian State (3-2) and NCAA Division II Pfeiffer University (6-3).  

Milligan opened up the day with a win over the Lady Mountaineers, as junior standout Sidney Burns (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) is credited with the win. Burns pitched five complete innings, while yielding no earned runs and striking out two.  

Freshman Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) led the Lady Buffs at the plate during the first game as she was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Other offensive Lady Buff contributors were sophomore Jessica Fix (Chesapeake, Va.) and senior Leah White (Fall Branch, Tenn.). Fix was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, while White was also 1-for-3 and pitched in two RBIs.  

The Lady Buffs lost the second game of the day to NJCAA member school Walters State Community College. The Lady Senators knocked off the Lady Buffs by a high scoring final of 8-7. Sophomore Rachel Ingleby (Knoxville, Tenn.) was dealt the loss in 2 2/3 innings of work.

During the second game, Fix added much of the offensive spark for Milligan with a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning to give the Lady Buffs a 7-6 lead. Fix was 2-for-3 at the plate and tallied five RBIs. Freshman Allie Smith (Lebanon, Va.) was a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish with a run scored and a RBI.

Senior Ryann Musick (Elizabethton, Tenn.) earned the win against Pfeiffer in the nightcap. Musick pitched four innings, striking out two and yielding one earned run.  

Burns led the Lady Buffs offensively during the final game as she was 2-for-2 with a run scored. White was 1-for-1 also with a run scored.

“We played pretty good ball today,” commented Head Coach Wes Holly. “It was good to play against all different collegiate levels and have the results we did.”   

The Lady Buffs travel across town to take on the Lady Bucs of East Tennessee State University and the Lady Pioneers of Tusculum College on Saturday, Oct. 10.
