Alfano, Lorencen break records at tri-meet

Milligan College, Tenn. (Nov. 14, 2009) --- The Milligan College men’s and women’s swimming squads broke two school records in a tri-meet against King College and the University of the Cumberland on Saturday. Milligan also qualified three relay teams for the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships.

Freshman Megan Lorencen (Johnson City, Tenn.) captured the women’s school record in the 100-meter freestyle race in 58.15. Freshman Evan Alfano (Chattanooga, Tenn.) also set a new school record in the 100 breaststroke, swimming to a time of 1:02.03.

The Lady Aqua Buffs fielded two of Milligan’s three nationally qualifying relays. Victoria Licari (Atascadero, Calif.), Darcee Kubisiak (Johnson City, Tenn.), Gretchen Grant (Blountville, Tenn.) and Lorencen qualified for nationals in the 400 medley relay in 4:33.04. The 400 freestyle relay of Lorencen, Kubisiak, Grant and Rachel Landry (Boone, N.C.) swam to a time of 4:11.77.

The Aqua Buffs qualified also qualified a 400 medley team with a time of 3:46.65. Aaron Pigford (Johnson City, Tenn.), Allen Guimbellot (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Alfano and Eron Cavanaugh (Plainfield, Ind.) comprised the qualifying team.

Pigford won the 100 backstroke in 55.13. The men’s 400 freestyle relay of Adam Lewis (Wilmington, Ohio), Daniel Warfield (Andersonville, Tenn.), Taylor Duran (Johnson City, Tenn.), and Cavanaugh won the last event of the night, capturing enough points to push the Buffs past King College and claim second place.

The Buffs came in second to the host school, the University of the Cumberlands, while the women placed third in the meet.

Milligan’s swimmers will travel to Sewanee, Tenn. for a tri-meet against Asbury College and Sewanee College starting at 1 p.m. on Nov. 21.
