Milligan stings Lady Hornets
Rome, Ga. (Nov. 6, 2009) --- The Milligan College women’s basketball team knocked off the Lady Hornets of Concordia-Selma (Ala.) Friday afternoon on the first day of the Shorter Classic. The Lady Buffs took the opener with ease, 74-44.
The presence in the paint was too much for the Lady Hornets as the duo of Heather Mandela (Fairfax, Va.) and Alisha Mainer (Flag Pond, Tenn.) combined for 37 points and 25 rebounds in the contest. Mandela’s 26 point, 12 rebound performance marks her second double-double of the year, while Mainer notched her first with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
“We got off to a good start early,” commented Head Coach Rich Aubrey. “We were able to work the ball inside to Heather and Alisha which helped give us more opportunities. Our rebounding and defense were two key components in the win today.”
Milligan’s tenacious defense forced 22 Lady Hornet turnovers and held them to only 25 % shooting from the field. The Lady Buffs also out rebounded Concordia-Selma, 54-36, in the game.
With the win, the Lady Buffs remain blemish free at 3-0, and are off to the program’s best start since 1998.
The Lady Buffs play the host school, Shorter College (Ga.), Saturday, Nov. 7, for the final game of the Shorter Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
