Mixed results for Milligan tennis against UVA-Wise

JOHNSON CITY, TN (April 15, 2007) --- The Milligan College men's and women's tennis teams concluded their matches with Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) foe UVA-Wise on Sunday. The Buffaloes captured a 7-2 win over the Cavs, but the Lady Buffs lost 5-4 to UVA-Wise. The matches were started on March 28, in Wise, but rain forced the matches to be postponed and the weekend's weather moved the contests to ETSU's Memorial Center.

Tom Jones (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Travis Fields (Maryville, Tenn.) won their No. 2 doubles match 8-1 to go along with an 8-4 victory in No. 3 doubles from the team of Stuart Makinson (Franklin, N.C.) and Bryan Upshaw (Kingsport, Tenn.)

Charles Williams (Perth, Australia) won at No. 2 singles while Jones, Makinson, Upshaw and Fields also won their respective singles matches to capture a 7-2 win over the Cavs.

Amber Campbell (Erwin, Tenn.) and Myra O'Dell (Kingsport, Tenn.) won 8-4 in their No. 3 doubles match for the only point for Milligan in doubles action.

Milligan's Melissa Grgat (Melbourne, Australia) won in No. 1 singles for the eighth time in her last 11 matches. Grgat defeated Davina Dishner 6-2, 6-0. Sara Hopson (Greeneville, Tenn.) and Janie Mullins (Greenville, Ala.) won in their No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches to add two more points for Milligan.

The Buffaloes will travel to face AAC foe Virginia Intermont College for their 3 p.m. conference match Monday in Bristol. Both the Buffs and Lady Buffs will play at Tennessee Wesleyan College in their final AAC matches of the regular season on Tuesday, April 17. The matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Athens.
