Buffs split with no. 7 Southern Poly

Milligan College, Tenn. (March 5, 2008) --- The Milligan College men’s baseball team won the first game against No. 7 Southern Polytechnic University 15-12, but lost the nightcap 10-3.

Sophomore Frank Newcombe (Knoxville, Tenn.) got the win for the Buffs on three innings of play. Newcombe gave up one earned run while he struck out three batters.

Junior Brandon Murphy (Johnson City, Tenn.) led the Buffs at the plate with five RBIs, two doubles, while hitting 3-4. Junior Brian Busby (Lexington, S.C.) went 4-5 during the first game and tallied two runs. Junior Mark Simo (Sheffield Lake, Ohio) went 3-5 at the plate and scored twice.

Sophomore Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.) suffered the loss for the Buffs. Caldwell put in five innings of work on the mound. Junior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Busby both went 2-3 in the second game at the plate.

“We played pretty good during the first game; we swung the bat well and played good defense,” said Head Coach Nathan Meade. “During the second game we just let them hang around too long, and we made some mental mistakes that hurt us. We hope to take how we played in the first game and build from there.”

The Buffs host West Virginia Tech Friday, March 7. The first game of the double-header is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
