Milligan wins three, captures AAC tourney
BRISTOL, TENN. (May 2, 2008) — Milligan College won three games Friday to claim the Appalachian Athletic Conference softball tournament at White Top Creek Park.
After Union College knocked Milligan out of the winner's bracket on Thursday, the top-seeded Lady Buffs (36-17) barely made it past Montreat on Friday in a 13-inning, 2-1 victory in the loser's bracket final. Milligan then took a pair of games, 3-1 and 7-0, from Union in the championship round.
Leadoff hitter Sarah Smith had seven hits and Sydney Burns went the distance in both games against the Lady Bulldogs.
In the first game of the championship round, Smith had three hits of Milligan's five hits, drove in one run, scored another herself and stole a base. In the second game, she went for 4-for-4 and scored a run. Holly Napier had two hits and scored three runs, while Leah White drove in a pair of runs on a sacrifice.
Burns scattered six hits and allowed one unearned run in the first game, but shut down the Bulldogs with a two-hitter in the second. She struck out three in both games.
