Softball splits with Scots

Maryville, Tenn. (April 9, 2008) --- The Lady Buffs softball team split a doubleheader with Maryville College. This afternoon the Lady Buffs started out slow losing to Maryville 2-3, but rallied back to defeat the Lady Scots 4-0.

The Lady Buffs picked up two runs off of five hits. Senior Holly Napier (Pennington Gap, Va.) led the way for the lady Buffs at the plate, batting 2-for-3. Jessica Russell (New Market, Tenn.), Sydney Burns (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), and Ellyn Sapp (Johnson City, Tenn.) all collected single hits for the Lady Buffs.

Ryann Musick (Elizabethton, Tenn.) threw all seven innings for the Lady Buffs. She allowed three runs on nine hits, struck out two batters and walked two batters in the loss for Milligan.

Looking determined and focused to win the second game, the Lady Buffs dominated on both sides of the ball. Sarah Smith (Elizabethton, Tenn.) stepped up for the Lady Buffs and batted 2-for-4. She hit a double that brought in a run for the Lady Buffs. Knocking in two runs for the Lady Buffs was junior Mallory Tincher (Jacksonville, Fla.). Leah White (Fall Branch, Tenn.) also made her presence felt, as she knocked in a run for Milligan. Laken Stewart (Pennington Gap, Va.) and Alicia Engle (Erwin, Tenn.) contributed a hit a piece for the Lady Buffs.

Taking control of the mound and pitching a shut out was freshman standout pitcher Burns. She pitched a complete game and allowed only for hits. She tallied an impressive seven strikeouts and zero runs to get the win for the Lady Buffs.

“We need to work on our hitting and come out more focused at the start of the game,” commented Head Coach Wes Holly. “Our second game was much better and the girls played well. We need to stay focused and ready to play conference foe UVA-Wise on Saturday.”

The Lady Buffs will have a couple days of rest before they challenge UVA-Wise on April 12. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. at the Anglin Softball Field on the Milligan College Campus.
