Lady Buffs trample AAC foe Bulldogs
Athens, Tenn. (Apr. 17, 2008) --- The Lady Buffs softball team had a tough challenge this afternoon when they faced conference foe Tennessee Wesleyan College. The Lady Buffs downed the Bulldogs with a sweep 2-1 and 5-1. This improved the Lady Buffs record to 10-2 in the AAC conference and then 25-16 overall.

Impressive freshman pitcher Sidney Burns (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) started on the mound for the Lady Buffs. She pitched a complete game, earning the win for the Lady Buffs, allowing only one earned run and retiring six batters. Leading the way at the plate was junior Mallory Tincher (Jacksonville, Fla.) going 2-for-3. Seniors Sarah Smith (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Holly Napier (Pennington Gap, Va.) each added a hit for Milligan College. Junior Laken Stewart (Pennington Gap, Va.) and sophomores Leah White (Fall Branch, Tenn.) and Jessica Russell (New Market, Tenn.) also collected a hit for the Lady Buffs. The Lady Buffs collected eight hits, but scored their two runs in the first inning.
Game 2 Milligan 5 Tennessee Wesleyan 1
Once again stepping onto the mound for the Lady Buffs was Burns. She pitched a complete game, which included an extra inning, giving her eight innings pitched. She retired another six batters in this game and earned the win. White was the leading player at the plate for Milligan. She went 2-for-4 and had three RBIs. Heather Poindexter (Germanton, N.C.) had a strong performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3. The Lady Buffs played an extra inning and scored four of their five in the final inning. Napier was the key player in the eighth inning, hitting the ball deep to right center to bring in runner Alicia Engle (Erwin, Tenn.) to give the Lady Buffs the go ahead run.
“The girls played tremendous and Burns pitched two great games,” commented Head Coach Wes Holly. “The bats came to life and the girls played well all the way around.”
The Lady Buffs travel to Bluefield, Va. to take on conference foe Bluefield College, Saturday, April 19. The first game of this match up is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
