Lady Buffs sweep at classic
Bristol, Tenn. (Apr. 22, 2008) --- Milligan College softball team participated in the Tennessee/Virginia State Line Classic this afternoon and came away with two victories. The Lady Buffs defeated Emory and Henry 1-0 and Virginia Intermont 13-5. The Lady Buffs have now improved their win streak to seven going into senior night.

Facing a tough and challenging opponent, the Lady Buffs came away with a victory. Sydney Burns (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) pitched a complete game, in which she faced 22 batters. She retired four batters and allowed only two hits. The Lady Buffs looked to their leaders on the team to pull them through this close game. Senior Sarah Smith (Elizabethton, Tenn.) came through with a triple and two hits for the Lady Buffs. Junior Jessica Blevins (Watauga, Tenn.) also played well batting 1-for-2 and knocking in the lone run for the Lady Buffs.
Game 2 Milligan 13 Virginia Intermont 5
Looking to play better and capitalize on scoring opportunities is exactly what the Lady Buffs did. The Lady Buffs forced Virginia Intermont to play only five innings due to the run rule. Several players contributed to the success of the offense for the Lady Buffs, including two players that hit home runs. Leading the way was Laken Stewart (Pennington Gap, Va.) making her only hit of the night count, which happened to be a three RBI home run. Freshman Alicia Engle (Erwin, Tenn.) made her presence known batting 1-for-3, including three RBIs and a home run for the Lady Buffs. Mallory Tincher (Jacksonville, Fla.) was a perfect 1-for-1 that recorded three RBIs. Kayla Walker (Tracy, Calif.) batted 2-for-2, while Leah White (Fall Branch, Tenn.) and Smith batted 1-for-3. Rounding out the hitters for the Lady Buffs was Blevins batting 2-for-3.
Sophomore Ryann Musick (Elizabethton, Tenn.) got the start on the mound and pitched two innings for the Lady Buffs, allowing three hits and retiring three batters. Walker came in to pitch in relief and recorded the win for the Lady Buffs. She pitched two innings, allowing two hits and retiring one batter. Burns stepped on the mound to close things out for the Lady Buffs and is awarded the save. She only pitched one inning and retired one batter.
“Things got off to a rough start in the first game, but then our bats came alive and we started to make plays,” commented Head Coach Wes Holly.
The Lady Buffs will look to close out their last home game on April 24. This game will be senior night for the Lady Buffs and they will be facing AAC foe Covenant College, on the Milligan College campus, with the game set to start at 2 p.m.
