Milligan College, Tenn. (Apr. 10, 2008) --- Gretchen Grant (Kingsport, Tenn.), who was the top swimmer on the Sullivan Central swimming team this past season, has signed scholarship papers with Milligan College.

Grant holds school records in the 200 freestyle (2:11.0) and the 500 freestyle (5:42.8), but will concentrate on the 50 free, where she had a best of 26.8, and the 100 free (1:01.5) at Milligan.

"Gretchen is a racer,'' said Central coach Dustin Wiliams, "and that is one of the best things you can say about a swimmer. She is very, very competitive and was our top swimmer this past season.''

Grant qualified for state both her freshman and sophomore season. She missed her junior year due to medical reasons but came back strong this past season to lead the Lady Cougars. She finished fifth and sixth in her two specialties in the area championships.

"We are very happy to have Gretchen join our program,'' said Milligan coach Ron Goehring, a former Kingsport Barracuda and Dobyns-Bennett head swimming coach. "We are only in the second year of our program at Milligan but already last year we sent five girls to nationals.

"We're looking forward to having Gretchen join us. She is not only a great swimmer, but a great student and a great person.''

Grant is one of five area swimmers signed by Goehring since he came to Milligan. He signed Dobyns-Bennett swimmer Greg Cathers, Science Hill swimmer Taylor Duran and Lady Topper swimmer Darcee Kubisiak last year and this year has signed Science Hill's Aaron Pigford as well as Grant.
