Lady Buffs tennis reaches finals

Milligan College, Tenn. (Apr. 19, 2008) --- The Milligan College Lady Buffs placed second in the AAC Tournament, winning their second round 5-1 against UVA-Wise to advance to the finals.

Day One
Because of Milligan's high ranking, they received a first round bye. They continued to dominate when it came to the second round of the tournament. Caitlin Conely (Bristol, Tenn.) and Jessie Rose Remegi (Hilton Head, S.C.) had an easy 8-1 win in the number two slot. Janie Mullins (Greenville, Ala.) and Laura Bowman (Elizabethton, Tenn.) won their doubles match by default. Giving the team the only loss for the day, Melissa Grgat (Melbourne, Australia) and Sara Hopson (Greeneville, Tenn.) lost in a close match, 8-6. In singles action, Hopson won easily, 6-2, 6-4. Mullins also cruised to a win in the number five slot, 6-3, 6-1.

“I'm so proud of the team," said Coach Ron Worrell. "With this win, they secured a trip to the NAIA Region XII Tournament.”

Day Two
The final round against Union College, ranked 23rd in the nation, did not fare as well for the Lady Buffs. They lost to the Bulldogs 5-1. Freshman Conley came up with the only win for the Buffs in her singles match.

“Conley has had a stellar freshman campaign at Milligan," said Worrell. "She won the first set today in the finals by a score of 6-3, and was ahead 3-1 in the second set when her opponent had to retire due to a foot injury."

The Lady Buffs will next face the winner of the Kentucky Indiana Athletic Conference Tournament on May 2, 2008, with Milligan hosting the match.
