Buffs split with Urbana

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 16, 2008) --- The Milligan College men's baseball team started out rough Saturday, but came alive in the second game to get the victory.

The Buffs lost the first game of the double-header by a final of 2-1. Milligan held Urbana scoreless for the first three innings, but a two-run shot to center field from Urbana 's John Lindquist would end the scoreless game. The Buffs battled back in the bottom of the sixth when junior Brian Busby (Lexington,S.C.) drove in fellow junior Mark Simo (Sheffield Lake, Ohio) off a Busby single to right field.

Senior Nathan Fritz (Kingsport, Tenn.) started out on the hill for the Buffs in the first game, having struck out five while only walking two. Fritz pitched a complete game for the Buffs having scattered four hits and gave up two earned runs. Busby led the Buffs at the plate with two hits on three attempts, two stolen bases, and one RBI.

The second game was filled with a barrage of hits; Milligan totaled 15, while Urbana had 14. The Buffs won the nightcap 14-9. Milligan got off to a hot start due to a two run shot by senior Baker DeCamp (Miami, Fla.) in the first inning. Milligan closed just as strong, by bringing six runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.

Sophomore Frank Newcombe (Knoxville, Tenn.) is credited with the win. Newcombe threw for one inning for the Buffs, gave up two earned runs and recorded one strikeout. Freshman Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) got the save for the Buffs in one inning of work. Busby led the Buffs in the second game as well, going 3-4, including a three run shot to deep right field. Busby tallied four RBIs and one run. Junior Jeremy Hazen (Anderson, Ind.) went 2-4, with two runs and one RBI. Junior Justin Motte (Johnson City, Tenn.) went 2-5 at the plate including two doubles and two RBIs.

The Buffs host Urbana University Sunday, Feb. 17, at Anglin Field for the third and final game of their weekend stint against the Blue Knights. The series stands at 1-1. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
