Buffs split double-header with Bluefield
Milligan College, Tenn. (March 15, 2009) --- Sunday the Milligan College men's baseball team was 1-1 in their double-header against conference opponent Bluefield College.
The Buffs defeated the Rams 4-3 in the first game then struggled to produce runs in the final match-up, falling to the Rams 6-1.
Junior Collin Duffie (Calhoun, Ga.) started the first game and pitched five solid innings, getting the win and recording three strikeouts. Sophomore Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) proved reliable yet again, and was awarded the save.
Senior Brian Busby (Lexington, S.C.) was 2-2 at the plate with a run scored. The rest of the Buffs' offense was evenly spread, with five other players each contributing a hit.
The Buffs struggled in the second matchup to bring runners home. The first four innings saw six runners left on base, four of which were in scoring position.
Although the third out always seemed to come at an inopportune time, the Buffs' bats were making connections.
Busby led the Buffs at the plate again, batting 3-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.), senior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.), senior Brandon Murphy (Johnson City, Tenn.), and freshman Ryan White (Knoxville, Tenn.) each contributed a hit to the Buffs' offensive effort.
Junior Shawn Ray (York, S.C.) was attributed with the loss.
“In the first game it was good to get the win,” said Head Coach Nathan Meade . “Bluefield is a good team, and they swing the bats well. We were disappointed that we didn't score more runs. We had opportunities with runners on third that we just didn't capitalize on.”
The Buffs play the Rams at home again Monday, March 16, in a single nine-inning game. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
