Buffs sweep Wasps

Emory, Va. (March 17, 2009) --- The Milligan College men's baseball team dominated Emory and Henry College Tuesday, taking two games from the NCAA Division III Wasps on their home field. The Buffs' overall record is now 19-8.

In the first game, the Buffs defeated the Wasps 7-1, then came back strong again in the second game, shutting out the Wasps in a crushing 22-0 win.

Although they have been struggling to produce timely offense lately, the Buffs had no kinks in the system Tuesday.

In the afternoon game, junior Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.) was awarded with the win after pitching 4 2/3 solid innings, giving up one earned run and five hits.

Junior Mike Gallo (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Mark Allen Bounds (Strawberry Plains, Tenn.) finished out the game in relief, getting the job done without allowing a run.

To highlight Milligan offense in the first game, junior Eric Oxley (Ardmore, Tenn.) led the Buffs at the plate, batting 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Kendall Williams (Dillon, S.C.) batted 2-3 with a run scored.

In the 22-run blowout, the Buffs recorded 28 hits in all.

Oxley hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Senior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) added to the festivities, batting 2-3 with a two-run home run in the second inning. Senior Brian Busby (Lexington, S.C.) was 3-6 at the plate, while Caldwell was 2-3.

On the mound, freshman Josh Hullett (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing only two hits.

Bounds contributed two innings of relief, also giving up only two hits.

“We swung the bat well today,” said Head Coach Nathan Meade . “We've struggled the last few games offensively, so it was good to get some runs on the board.”

The Buffs play Brevard College at home Wednesday, March 18. The double header begins at 5 p.m.
