Buffs rout Roanoke College 10-4
Elizabethton, Tenn. (Feb. 9, 2009) --- Monday afternoon the Milligan College baseball team soundly defeated the Roanoke College Maroons 10-4 at Elizabethton Twins Stadium, giving the Buffs a solid 3-1 record at the start of the season.
The win was attributed to junior Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.), who started on the mound for the Buffs and pitched five innings.
Falling to an early 4-0 deficit in the first two innings, the Buffs battled back both defensively and offensively to win the game. Caldwell, settling into his routine, left the Maroons scoreless for three innings, and the Buffs began to circle the bases.
Senior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) was two-for-four at the plate with a three-run homerun in the fourth inning. Junior Dallas Crouch (Jefferson City, Tenn.) contributed a two-run triple, while sophomore Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) added a solo homerun.
Sophomore Mark Allen Bounds (Strawberry Plains, Tenn.) , freshman Josh Hullet (Knoxville, Tenn.), and junior Brandon Davis (Butler, Fla.) all contributed effective relief pitching.
“We battled through those first three or four innings,” said Head Coach Nathan Meade. “Then we got around to playing a little better. It's early in the season and we're going to make the adjustments.”
The Buffs will play the first of three games against Trevecca Nazarene on Friday, Feb. 13, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday. Friday's game will be held at Elizabethton Twins Stadium, starting at 2 p.m.
