Buffs split double-header with Trevecca

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 13, 2009) --- Friday night the Milligan College men's baseball team was 1-1 in their double-header against the Trevecca Nazarene University Trojans.

The Buffs fell to the Trojans 2-1 in the first game after battling through extra innings, then defeated them 4-3 to complete the day's games on a positive note.

The competition was close Friday, with both teams putting up challenging pitching. Offense was hard to produce on both sides.

Although junior reliever Aaron Dorriety (Pickens, S.C.) was attributed with the loss in the first game, junior Collin Duffie (Calhoun, Ga.) started the game and pitched six scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Senior Justin Motte (Johnson City, Tenn.) was two-for-four at the plate with a run scored.

Sophomore Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.), senior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.), junior Eric Oxley (Ardmore, Tenn.), and junior Dallas Crouch (Jefferson City, Tenn.) each added a hit to the Buffs' offensive effort.

With runners at first and second in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Buffs were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

The Buffs made a strong showing early on in the second game with senior Brian Busby (Lexington, S.C.) hitting a solo homerun in the top of the first inning. The Trojans answered in the fourth inning—starting pitcher Shawn Ray's (York, S.C.)   only earned run.

Ray, who was attributed with the win, pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out two batters.

Sophomore Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, and was awarded the save.

Street and Jones each contributed two hits to the Buffs' offense. Juniors Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.), Randy Rabon (Rock Hill, S.C.), Busby, and Oxley each added one hit.

Jones made a game-saving catch in deep center field with runners on first and second to end the game.

“Trevecca is a very good team,” said Head Coach Nathan Meade. “We've got to do a better job of getting guys in who are in scoring position. But our pitchers both gave us a chance to win a ball game tonight, and that's really all you can ask for.”

The Buffs travel to Bristol, Va. to battle Virginia Intermont Wednesday, Feb. 18 in their first conference matchup. The double-header is set to begin at 2 p.m.
