Buff baseball wraps up week in Florida
Daytona Beach, Fla. (March 6, 2009) --- The Milligan College baseball had a busy week over their spring break as they played three teams in Florida. On Tuesday, March 3, the Buffs played Warner Southern (Lake Wales, Fla.) in a doubleheader. The Buffs won the first game 6-0 and won the second game 13-8. On Wednesday, March 4, the Buffs played Weber International (Babson Park, Fla.) in a doubleheader. The Buffs lost both games 5-4 and 9-8. On Thursday, March 5, the Buffs played Embry Riddle (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and won 8-3.
In the first game of the doubleheader against Warner Southern, junior Mike Gallo (Peabody, Mass.) earned the 6-0 win for the Buffs pitching seven innings and recording seven strikeouts. Leading at the plate was senior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) going 2-3 with two RBIs and a homerun run. Senior Brian Busby (Lexington, SC.) went 2-3 with one RBI and one run.
In the second game against Warner Southern, junior Aaron Dorriety (Pickens, SC.) earned the 13-8 win, pitching three innings and recording three strikeouts, while allowing three two hits and three runs. Leading the bat for the Buffs was junior Randy Rabon (Rock Hill, SC.) going 2-3 with two runs and one RBI. Seniors Brandon Murphy (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Justin Motte (Johnson City, Tenn.) both tallied two RBIs. Junior Eric Oxley (Ardmore, Tenn.) and Kendall Williams (Dillon, SC.) had a homerun each.
In Wednesday's doubleheader against Weber International, Dorriety earned the 5-4 loss in the first game pitching one inning and allowing one hit and one run. He also had one strikeout. Dorriety was relieved by junior Frank Newcombe (Knoxville, Tenn.) who pitched five innings and allowed four runs and nine hits. He recorded three strikeouts. Leading at the plate was Street and Busby, both going 3-4 with two runs. Motte went 2-2 with one RBI.
In the second game of the doubleheader against Weber International, sophomore Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) earned the 9-8 loss, closing the game and pitching one inning and allowing two hits and one run. Leading at the plate for the Buffs was sophomore Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) going 3-4 with two RBIs and a homerun. Williams went 1-3 with two RBIs and a homerun.
In Thursday's game against Embry Riddle, junior Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.) earned the 8-3 win for the Buffs, pitching two innings and allowing no hits or runs. He recorded one strikeout. Junior Shawn Ray (York, S.C.) led off on the mound for the Buffs, pitching eight innings and recording six strikeouts. Leading the Buffs at the plate was Busby going 3-6 with two runs and one RBI. Williams went 2-6 with two RBIs and two runs, while Rabon went 3-6 with two RBIs.
The Buffs play in a conference doubleheader against UVA-Wise on Saturday, March 7. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Milligan College. |
