Milligan raises funds for athletic programs
Milligan College, Tenn. (June 17, 2009) --- Milligan College hosted their annual Greenwell-Aldridge Memorial Golf Classic Monday at the Johnson City Country Club and helped raise over $15,000 for Milligan College athletics. The tournament, in its 15 th year of existence, has helped to raise over $150,000 for the Buffs and Lady Buffs programs.
The tournament is played in honor of Milligan Alums Duard Aldridge and Dennis Greenwell. Each year, the proceeds of the tournament go to the Milligan College athletic programs in order to continually make improvements to uphold the winning tradition that the Buffs and Lady Buffs have established.
Both Aldridge and Greenwell were members of the Buffs' basketball team in the 1950s under NAIA Hall of Famer Duard Walker. Coach Walker instilled in them core values that made them Champions of Character on and off of the court and because of their legacy, their families in part with Milligan College, host this tournament each year in their memory.
Despite the wet conditions, both the men's and mixed divisions saw very low scores.

The men's division was very competitive this year with five teams shooting 20-under par or better. The foursome of Dr. Todd Fowler captured the 2009 title as him and his squad of Milligan's athletic trainer Chris McWherter, Bryan Sangid and Roger Catlett fired a stellar 23-under par 49. The Fowler foursome fended off Jack Songster's team of Phil Begley and two of the Buffs' golfers, sophomore Jared Songster (Johnson City, Tenn.) and junior transfer Blake Howard (Johnson City, Tenn.), who was a shot behind at 50. There was a 3-way tie for third place at 52.
(L to R: David Stewart, Wes Holly, Laken Stewart, Ken Broyles)
In the mixed division, Head Softball Coach Wes Holly's team of former Lady Buff Laken Stewart, David Stewart and Ken Broyles rolled in with an 18-under par to lead the field. Kevin Greenwell's team of Brende Patterson, Jenni Greenwell and Matt Brown were two strokes behind to place second. Jeff Aldridge's group of Melanie Aldrige, former Lady Buff softball standout Megan Aldridge and Buffs' basketball player Goose Harmon rounded out the top three.
