Buffs take two from Tornado

Bristol, Va. (March 21, 2009) --- The Milligan College men's baseball team had big results in a big faceoff Saturday, as they battled rival King College in a double-header, resulting in two wins for the Buffs. Having won six games in a row, the Buffs are now 23-8 and 7-2 in the AAC.

The Buffs defeated the Tornado 8-5 in the first game, then kicked the offense into high gear in the second game, winning 12-2.

Junior Collin Duffie (Calhoun, Ga.) earned the win in the first game, pitching five solid innings, allowing one earned run, six hits, and recording five strikeouts.

Sophomore Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, and was awarded the save.

The top of the Buffs' lineup was explosive in both games, and sophomore Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the pack all day.

Jones was 4-5 at the plate in the first game with two runs scored, three singles, a double, an RBI, and a stolen base. Seniors Brian Busby (Lexington, S.C.) and Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) each contributed a run scored and an RBI. Senior Justin Motte (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 2-3 at the plate with a solo home run in the fifth inning, two runs scored, a double, and an RBI.

The Buffs kept their momentum into the second game, aided by starting pitcher Shawn Ray (York, S.C.) , who pitched six innings without allowing an earned run.

Jones was 3-4 at the plate in the second game with four runs scored, two doubles, an RBI, and a walk. Street hit 4-5 with three runs scored, three RBIs, two singles, a double, and a two-run home run in the second inning. Junior Kendall Williams (Dillon, S.C.) was 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored, two RBIs and a double. Seniors Brandon Murphy (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Busby each contributed an RBI.

“We came out ready to play today,” said Head Coach Nathan Meade. “We scored runs early, which really helped our pitchers out. We had a few mistakes on defense that we will correct. Playing a team like King, you have to bring your A-game. It was good to get two wins today, but we've still got one more game tomorrow.”

The Buffs face King College again Sunday, March 22, in Bristol, Va. The game begins at 1 p.m.
