Buffs split with Montreat

Montreat, N.C. (March 30, 2009) --- The Milligan College men's baseball team (25-9, 9-3) battled Montreat College in a conference double-header Monday, resulting in a win and a loss.

The Buffs fell to the Cavaliers 6-3 in the first game, then won 4-2 in an extra-innings battle.

In the first game, junior Kendall Williams (Dillon, S.C.) was 1-2 at the plate with a home run in the fifth inning and two RBIs. Juniors Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Randy Rabon (Rock Hill, S.C.) each added a double to the Buffs' offensive effort.

Junior Collin Duffie (Calhoun, Ga.) started on the mound for the Buffs in the first game and was attributed with the loss.

However, the Buffs bounced back in the second game, persevering through the long haul.

Junior Shawn Ray (York, S.C.) started on the mound in the second game, pitching six innings and allowing only two earned runs and five hits.

Sophomore Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and recording one strikeout. Trivett was awarded the win.

With a total of 16 hits, the Buffs' bats were hard at work in the second game.

Senior Brian Busby (Lexington, S.C.) led the Buffs, batting 3-5 with a double, two singles, and two RBIs. Junior Eric Oxley (Ardmore, Tenn.) followed, batting 3-5 with a double and a home run in the second inning.

Senior Brandon Murphy (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 2-3 at the plate with a double and a run scored, while sophomore Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) was 2-5 with a double and a run scored. Senior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) batted 2-5 with a double and a run scored, contributing the winning run in the eighth inning.

The game was tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth when Jones hit a one-out double. Street singled, scoring Jones. Oxley then hit a two-out double, which brought in Street.

Trivett then proceeded to shut down the Cavaliers in the bottom of the eighth to finish the game.

The Buffs face Montreat College again Tuesday, March 31, in Montreat, N.C. The game begins at 1 p.m.
