Buffs defeat Montreat in 12-inning battle

Kingsport, Tenn. (May 4, 2009) --- Saturday night the Milligan College men's baseball team, seeded fourth in the AAC Tournament, endured an extra-inning saga that lasted past midnight, finally defeating No. 5 seed Montreat College 10-6.

Junior Collin Duffie (Calhoun, Ga.) started the game, pitching 6 1/3 solid innings. He allowed only one earned run on four hits, one walk and struck out six. When Duffie left the game, the Buffs led 6-1.

However, Montreat returned in the ninth inning to score five runs, tying the game.

Junior Frank Newcomb (Knoxville, Tenn.) dominated the final innings of the game, allowing no runs, no walks, and two hits in three innings. Newcomb struck out three. While the defense held strong, the Buffs were able to score the final runs in the twelfth inning to finish the game.

Senior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) led the Buffs at the plate, batting 4-7 with a double and four runs scored. Senior Brian Busby (Lexington, S.C.) hit 3-5 with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs. Junior Dallas Crouch (Jefferson City, Tenn.) hit 1-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Senior Justin Motte (Johnson City, Tenn.) also batted 3-5 with a run scored.

The victory advances the Buffs to the next round where they will face the No. 1 seed, Tennessee Wesleyan.
