Buffs split with Cumberland University
Milligan College, Tenn. (April 15, 2009) --- The Milligan College men's baseball team (30-13, 13-6) split a double-header with Cumberland University Wednesday in non-conference competition.
The Bulldogs defeated the Buffs 3-0 in the first game, but the Buffs came back to win the final game 3-1.
Although senior Michael Dillow (Gray, Tenn.) was attributed with the loss in the first game, he pitched six solid innings, scattering five hits, and allowing two earned runs.
Senior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 2-4 at the plate with a double. Both senior Brian Busby (Lexington, S.C.) and junior Dallas Crouch (Jefferson City, Tenn.) were 2-3 at the plate.
In the second game, junior Frank Newcomb (Knoxville, Tenn.) turned out the second solid pitching performance of the day for the Buffs, throwing five innings and allowing only one earned run. Junior Aaron Dorriety (Pickens, S.C.) threw an inning of relief in the sixth, holding the Bulldogs' offense and recording a strikeout.
Sophomore Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, recording a strikeout. This was Trivett's tenth save of the season, making him .
The Buffs' offense was a team effort consisting of several multiple-base hits.
Street was 1-3 at the plate with a triple and a run scored. Senior Justin Motte (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 1-1 with a double, two RBIs, a walk, and a sac fly. Junior Randy Rabon (Rock Hill, S.C.) hit 1-2 with a double and a run scored, while senior Brandon Murphy (Johnson City, Tenn.) contributed a home run in the second inning.
It was good to get the win, said Head Coach Nathan Meade . I didn't feel like we swung the bats as well as we could have in the first game. We didn't capitalize with runners in scoring position. But it's a good win every time we can beat a quality team like Cumberland.
The Buffs travel to Barbourville, Ky., to face Union College on Friday, April 17. The double-header begins at 2 p.m.
