Buffs win two; Newcomb throws 1-hitter

Milligan College, Tenn. (April 20, 2009) --- Monday evening the Milligan College men's baseball team (32-16, 14-9) faced Virginia Intermont, winning both games of the double-header at Anglin Field.

The Buffs defeated the Cobras 11-9 in the first game, then shut out the opponent 4-0 with an impressive showing on the mound from junior Frank Newcomb (Knoxville, Tenn.) .

Senior Michael Dillow (Gray, Tenn.) started the first game, pitching four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, and no walks.

At this point in the game, the Buffs led 11-0. Taking the Buffs by surprise, Virginia Intermont made a comeback after Dillow exited the game, bringing the score to 11-9.

Nonetheless, sophomore Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and was awarded his eleventh save. He is now among the top three pitchers in the nation for saves earned.

The Buffs' offense was evenly spread, with junior Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.) batting 2-2 with a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Junior Dallas Crouch (Jefferson City, Tenn.) also batted 2-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Ricky Morgan (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 1-1 with a home run, while senior Justin Motte (Johnson City, Tenn.) batted 2-4.

Newcomb pitched the complete second game, allowing only one hit and one walk in the 4-0 shutout.

Senior Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 1-2 at the plate with two walks and two runs scored, while Motte was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Buffs face Brevard College Tuesday, April 21, in Brevard, N.C. The double-header begins at 2 p.m.
