Buffs, Lady Buffs fall at AAC Tournament
Chattanooga, Tenn. (April 24, 2009) --- The Milligan College men's and women's tennis teams competed in the AAC Tournament Friday, as the Lady Buffs knocked off the Lady Tornado of King College 5-0, but eventually lost to the Lady Bulldogs of Union College 5-1. The Buffs fell to the Tornado 5-1 during the first round.
In the first round , the Lady Buffs swept the Lady Tornadoes 5-0 as they won the No. 1, 2 and 3 doubles and the No. 1 and No. 5 singles. Senior Sarah Hopson ( Greenville , Tenn. ) and freshman Albany Kelly ( Chattanooga , Tenn. ) won at No. 1 doubles against Nerece Stoltz and Sarah Anderson 8-2. At No. 2 doubles sophomores Jessie Rose Remegi (Hilton Head, S.C) and Caitlin Conley ( Bristol , Tenn. ) won against Crystal Harwell and Natalie Walters 8-2. No. 3 doubles junior Janie Mullins ( Greenville , A.L) and sophomore Heather Bell (Franklin N.C.) fought hard to defeat Abby Ross and Jessica Tipton 8-4. Conley won at No. 1 singles against Stoltz 6-2, 6-1. At No. 5 singles Mullins won against Ross 6-1, 6-4.
In the second round the Lady Buffs fell to the Lady Bulldogs 5-1. Mullins and Bell defeated Nicole Bistline and Ximena Aquilar at No.3 doubles 8-2. At No.2 doubles Remegi and Conley lost the closet match of the day against Katie Sakalauskas and Andressa Coelho 9-7.
On the men's side, King defeated Milligan 5-1 in the first round. The Buffs were able to secure a win at the No. 1 doubles with an 8-3 victory courtesy of freshmen Ricky Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Wesley Rice (Knoxville, Tenn.) .
“Overall, I am really pleased with both teams and how they played at the tournament,” commented Head Coach Ron Worrell.
