No. 21 Southern Poly sneaks by Milligan

Marietta, Ga. (Dec. 13, 2009) --- The Milligan College women’s basketball team came up short against No. 21 Southern Polytechnic (Ga.) State University Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup, 63-60.

The Lady Buffs outrebounded and outshot the 21st ranked Lady Hornets, but it was not enough Sunday. Milligan shot 37.5 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from beyond the arc, as opposed to Southern Poly’s 36.4 percent effort from the field and 16.7 percent from 3-point range. Additionally, the Lady Buffs shot an impressive 17-of-19 from the charity stripe. However, the difference in the ball game was turnovers. Southern Poly forced 22 Lady Buffs’ turnovers and only yielded 10 on their home court.

Offensively, Science Hill product Jaimee Hill (Johnson City, Tenn.) led the Lady Buffs with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Milligan sophomore Ashlee Price (Rogersville, Tenn.) tacked on 12 points, while freshman Megan Casteel (Greeneville, Tenn.) had eight points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting from the floor. Junior center Heather Mandela (Fairfax, Va.) grabbed 13 rebounds and added seven points in the effort.

With the loss, the Lady Buffs fall to 9-5 overall and remain 3-0 in the league, to lead the AAC.

The Milligan women are finished until the New Year when they travel to take on Berea (Ky.) College on Jan. 4, at 7:30 p.m.
