Lady Buff soccer ties Roanoke College

Salem, Va. (September 1, 2010) --- The Milligan College women’s soccer team traveled to Roanoke College for their first road game of the year, and came away with a 1-1 tie after two overtimes in a nonconference matchup Wednesday night at Donald J. Kerr Stadium in Salem, Va.

The Lady Buffs jumped out to an early lead when Rachel Martin (Blountville, Tenn.) scored her third goal of the season in the third minute of the contest. The score remained 1-0 until the 84th minute when Roanoke found the goal to tie the game and force overtime. During the two overtimes, the Lady Buffs were unable to break the stalemate.

Defensively, Heather Crumplen (Courtice, Ontario) had an outstanding game at the goalkeeper position. Out of 10 Maroon shots on goal, Crumplen recorded nine saves.

“It is disappointing to not get the win especially since we led most of the game, but Roanoke is a very good side,” Head Coach Lisa Buckley said. “We didn’t play great, but we battled hard.”

Lady Buff C.C. ranked 13th nationally

Milligan College, Tenn. (September 1, 2010) --- The Milligan College Lady Buffs Cross Country team was ranked 13th nationally in the NAIA Women’s Cross Country Top 25 Preseason Coaches’ poll as announced by the national office.

“It's always a positive thing to get this type of recognition but a great deal of work needs to take place to back it up,” Head Coach Chris Layne said. “Ultimately, we want to be inside the top 10 when it's all said and done."

The Lady Buffs finished 11th last season at the national championships. Before that, they had recorded four straight top ten finishes, including a third and fourth in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

The women’s squad will be led by 2009 All-American Gillian Giffen (Knoxville, Tenn.). Giffen, who is a two-time AAC runner of the year, finished 21st individually at last year’s national championships. She is joined by three sophomores in Catie McMahon (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.), Leah Nelson (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Lauren Hubbard (Kingsport, Tenn.), who also participated in the 2009 NAIA Cross Country Championships.

In addition to the national ranking, the Lady Buffs were ranked first in the AAC, while the men’s team was picked second in the conference behind last season’s champion Bryan College. Milligan’s ladies are going for their eight straight conference crown, and the men are vying for their second title in three years.

Milligan soccer falls in opener

Milligan College, Tenn. (August 30, 2010) --- The Milligan College men’s soccer team came up short in their season opener as they fell 3-1 to Savannah College of Art and Design on Monday afternoon at Anglin Field.

Rusty Baxter (Knoxville, Tenn.) had the lone goal for the Buffs as his kick in the 37th minute tied the contest at 1-1. Despite several good looks at the goal, Milligan was unable to answer a pair of SCAD goals in the second half.

Alexander Haun (Knoxville, Tenn.) got the nod at the goalie position and recorded two saves in the contest. In the game, Milligan outshot the Bees 18-10 and had six shots on goal.

“I am not disappointed in the way we played,” Head Coach Adam Laney said. “We outshot them and beat them in every category statistically, but we just couldn’t score. The only area I am a little bit disappointed in is a little bit of discipline. Overall, I thought we showed fairly well.”
