Johnson City, Tenn. (Nov. 13, 2009) --- In the night cap of the AAC semifinals the No. 1 seeded Buffaloes from Milligan College fell to the No. 4 Cavaliers of Montreat (N.C.) College Friday night by a final of 2-1.
The Buffs came out strong controlling the opening half as they scored in the 15th minute when senior Travis Philips (Winston-Salem, N.C.) connected with sophomore Sandre Wilson (Mandeville, Jamaica). Wilson headed in a perfectly placed corner from Philips to give the Buffs a 1-0 advantage.
The momentum would quickly shift after the officials gave senior Franklin Mbouge (Yaoundé, Cameroon) a red card for a tackle made inside the box on a Cavs breakaway. Playing with only 10 men in orange and black would seem to hinder the Buffs post season hopes as play continued.
The Cavs answered in the 50th minute off of a Paul Connell goal compliments of Stephen Jackson to knot the game at a goal apiece. Nearing the end of regulation Montreat’s Shaka Bangura kicked a knuckle ball that soared through the air and deceptively baffled All-AAC goal keeper Bryan Newbold (Sylva, N.C.) to give the Cavs the go ahead goal.
Milligan College, Tenn. (Nov. 13, 2009) --- The Milligan College men’s soccer team was well represented on the AAC awards list, as voted on by the coaches.
Senior goal keeper Bryan Newbold (Sylva, N.C.) was named first team All-AAC as he recorded 80 saves during his senior campaign finishing tied for second in the league. Joining Newbold on the first team, were senior midfielder Philip Wilson (Middlesbrough, England) and sophomore Andrew Stewart (New Castle upon Tyne, England). Wilson finished the season second in goals scored in the conference (15), while Stewart was a key member of the Buffs defense. Newbold, Wilson and Stewart were all AAC Players of the Week this past season.
Grabbing the second team All-AAC honors for the Buffs were sophomore Sandre Wilson (Mandeville, Jamaica) and senior Joshua Scott (London, England). Rounding out the awards were sophomore Zigga Wright (Clarendon, Jamaica) and sophomore Nahom Tekle (Louisville, Ky.) on the third team.
