McWherther, a 1980 graduate of East Tennessee State University, received his degree in Physical Education and Athletic Training. In 1980, he was hired by Science Hill High School to become the first head athletic trainer for a public high school in the state of Tennessee. He spent 11 years with Science Hill High School before accepting a position with the now Wellmont Health System, in which he held several titles in the field of Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine. The latest of which was the formation of the Regional Sports Medicine Institute, where McWherther was the supervisor of six certified athletic trainers in the Sullivan and Hawkins County School Systems. During his tenure in the fields of athletic training, physical therapy, and sports medicine he became a certified golf fitness specialist. In addition to golf fitness he has also trained area recreational, high school, college, and professional athletes to increase athletic performance as well as the prevention of injuries. These programs included jump and speed training to decrease the risk of knee injuries and throwing programs to decrease the risk of shoulder and back injuries.
